Billabong Surfing Cloud 9 Invitational in the Philippines

PHILIPPINES surfer Edito ‘Peso’ Alcala is the new king of Cloud 9 after defeating the world’s best tube riders to win the prestigious Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational at the remote island of Siargao in the Philippines. Cloud 9, an ultra perfect right hand reef break, lived up to expectation, serving out epic 2-2.5 metre barrelling waves for the final day of competition surfing. Local ace Alcala, who learned to surf at the revered break, rode barrel after perfect barrel to beat defending title holder Wade Goodall (Caloundra, Qld, Aus) in a tight 35-minute man-on-man final. But 20-year-old Alcala didn’t have it all his own way in the final, having to fight back from a slow start to take home a last-minute victory over Goodall in front of a vocal Philippines crowd. Sitting in second with two minutes to go and with priority, Alcala jagged a set wave before weaving through the belly of a Cloud 9 cavern to jag a heat-winning 9.43 ride. Alcala finishing on a final two wave combined total of 18.16-points to Goodall’s 17.77. Sunshine Coast star Goodall, who heads home with $4,500 (USD) for his runner-up placing today, couldn’t replicate the barrel riding performance that saw him take out last year’s event.

391 - Rip Curl Australian FreeRide Pro 2008: Throwdown Event and Wrap-Up Highlights

The finals of the Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro were run today in perfect snow in the “black diamond” advanced terrain of Thredbo’s famous Bluff. Spectators and competitors were calling it the best action ever seen in a freeride competition with 29 of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders revelling in the perfect snow conditions and aiming to take a large share of the $20,000 prize money on offer. It was a very difficult task for the judges, but in the end it was the superior technical tricks and difficult lines of Sam Foster (men’s ski), Nate Johnstone (men’s snowboard) and Wiki Jones (women’s snowboard) that edge them into first place. The course consisted of man-made jumps, and log rails mixed in with the natural rock bands and cornices. The skiers and snowboarders really stepped it up with the announcer running out of superlatives as they threw down a variety of 540s, 720s, front flips and back flips with speed, control and precision. Each competitor had two runs through the course, the results coming from the highest scoring runs. Highlights were Sam Foster’s huge 1080 spin off a 10-foot cornice, Andrea Berchtold’s 50-foot front flip and Nate Johnstone’s cab 540 (reverse spin). The results in the men’s snowboard were very close, only a point separating first and third, but it was Nate Johnstone’s (Mona Vale, NSW) flawless second run that gave him the edge over Shayne Pospisil (Mammoth Mountain, USA) and Ryan Tiene (Port Macquarie, NSW). In the men’s skiing Jindabyne’s Sam Foster nailed an aggressive, creative line to push Andrea Berchtold (Jindabyne, NSW) into second with Watkin McLennan (Mt Buller, Vic) third. For Foster the win in his first major victory. In the women’s snowboard, Ali Deane, number one qualifier and 2007 Rip Curl Freeride Pro champ, had to pull out due to a knee injury. That left Wiki Jones (Thredbo, NSW), Kym Cragnolini (Jindabyne, NSW) and Laura Williams (Thredbo, NSW) to battle it out in the final. Jones emerged as a clear winner, with Cragnolini second, just ahead of Williams. The finals capped off a sensational week of skiing and snowboarding and included a spectacular under-lights rail and big air event last night – The Rip Curl Invitational Throwdown. A big crowd was entertained as the invited athletes made the most of the unique set-up which include two jumps, two rails and two spectacular wall rides. In a unique twist the riders and skiers judged the overall winners themselves with Boen Ferguson (Jindabyne, NSW), Tom McGrath (Canberra, ACT) and Erin Tanner (Canberra, ACT) taking the tile and the cash. The Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro has gone down as the best and most unique snow event of 2008 and will be an integral part of the 2009 snow event calendar.

390 - Rip Curl Australian FreeRide Pro 2008: Day 1 Action Highlights

Day one of the Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro supported by Jim Beam was held in perfect conditions in Thredbo today with many spectators calling it the best ever ski and snowboard event held in Australia. The contest is different as it is not held in the controlled environment of the terrain park or half pipe, but was held in natural terrain of the Bluff/Cannonball area which contains some of Australia’s most advanced and varied terrain. The Rip Curl Australian Freeride Pro attracted some of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders as well as international competitors, and carried $20,000 prize money. The event involved eight divisions – Men’s Open Ski and Snowboard, Junior Men’s Ski and Snowboard, Open Women’s Ski and Snowboard and Junior Women’s Ski and Snowboard. Competitors were judged on two runs, their best score counting towards the results. In the Open Men’s 12 skiers and 12 snowboarders have made it through to tomorrow’s finals and the action was fast and furious. Today spectators were treated to a combination of big aerial manoeuvres and rock jumps as the competitors revelled in the soft dry snow. In the Men’s Open the top three qualifiers in snowboard were Nathan Perry, Tyson Carr and Ryan Tiene. In the skiing Boen Ferguson, William Dawson and Jordan Houghton were the top three. The open women’s snowboard saw three Thredbo riders take the top spots for tomorrow’s finals – Ali Deane, Wiki Jones and Kaura Williams. The forecast is for another good day and great snow and organisers are expecting the competitors to step it up even further. The other divisions were wrapped up today with Zoe Jaboor from Mount Buller, Vic wining the open women’s ski, Torie Hamilton-Wilson the junior women’s ski. The junior division was a great showcase of Australia’s future snow talent with Lucas Marshall (Jindabyne, NSW) winning the skiing and Billy Hayman (Jindabyne, NSW) the snowboarding. Jess Shanahan won the junior women’s snowboarding. After tomorrow’s open finals the action continues with the Rip Curl Invitational Throwdown. It is a rail and air comp and will be held under lights tomorrow night, followed by a huge after party.
